if most large associations took advantage of their significantly advantaged positions and launched and promoted their own vertical social network they could become a very successful web 2.0 organization.
If we don't get in front of it, for-profits will certainly figure out that we're sitting on valuable attention in our demographics. (Example: Nurse Linkup, which I blogged about awhile back). Besides, why not do it? The exposure is limited, it's relatively inexpensive, and it's fun :)
@Ben: Sorry, should have been more clear: rolling your own myspace - bad idea (think: ASAE 2006). Want people to network betterer? Add a url field to your member profile page for LinkedIn or myspace or whatever. Sidenote: I've heard LinkedIn Groups are pretty nice. @Nick: Nurse Linkup is interesting. Great find. Is it free to join? Are they actively trying to partner with nursing associations? They should be. Those two banner ads can't bring in that much dough.
@Ben - apparently we think alike or maybe I just ripped off your ideas;) That said, I think that\'s the right approach. Members who would be interested in participating probably already are elsewhere - I say let them use those services.
