May 2008

This month we cover:
  • A Project Launch
  • The 2008 N-TEN Conference
  • Re:Members Updates
  • A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tip

RedBox Workshop

We launched a new site for RedBox Workshop, an exhibit/environment design and fabricator (and fellow non-profit vendor). Using Re:Members, our content management system, we created a stack of front-end templates to show off their incredible work and make maintenance super easy (See the gallery template). In addition, we added a blog to the site to help create greater visibility for the firm.

NTEN Conference Wrap-Up

In late March, we headed down to New Orleans for the 2008 Nonprofit Technology Conference. We saw New York Times writer David Pogue preform the iPhone song (and tell us about GrandCentral), learned some great Google Analytics tricks and got to tell people about our CMS at the Science Fair. It was a great time! Thanks to Holly Ross, the rest of NTEN and the City of New Orleans for being fantastic hosts! See you next year in San Francisco!

CMS Updates

Last week, we updated a couple items in Re:Members. We changed the way uploaded files are displayed. Now, users have access to more information: file size, date and description. We also made it easier to view and moderate blog comments by cleaning up the interface and adding more information about each commenter. More updates next month...

Search Engine Optimization Tip

Here's a quick SEO tip to help with April's new feature. When adding content to your site, avoid excessive URL depth. In addition to creating extra clicks (or click distance), pages buried in your site's file system are given less value by search engines and are less likely to rank higher in a search result. In fact, many search engines stop following links after 4 levels of navigation. Here's an example:

Good (high value):
http://www.yoursite.org/services/projectmanagement

Bad (low value):

http://www.yoursite.org/US/about/services/chicago-office/projectmanagement

In short, less click distance = better search engine rankings.
