Usability 101

We have rules for everything in life that we all obey. So why do basic usability rules get broken? If an icon exists that meets the 100 per cent rule (as opposed to the 80 per cent) that is an every application from here to Taipei, such as the “X” close button. Should it not execute that expected function?

Shame on Feedburner for having such an inconsistancy on their newsletter subscription page. I can see they are trying to indicate an input error using this red “X”. Since that is the case, they should try and use an image that isn’t the exact same size as the “X” in every window on user’s computer.

Feedburner close button that does nothing.
